I understand all the comments very well.
Let’s forget about the ranking aspect of the game (which we should completely disregard) and focus on the main objective of this game: to encourage amateur radio operators to practice outdoor radio.
How many amateur radio operators weren’t doing Pota activations a few months ago and are now regular practitioners? Surely there are some.
I share reports of my activations on the Pota France Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/358260486877677) and also on the Italian website https://pota.radioexperiences.net. From this site, I send personalized QSL cards and links to reports of each activation to my correspondents. You’ll see that getting around by bike isn’t always easy, but it’s still a lot of fun.
Please, rest assured that it’s a great pleasure to join in during activations (in Park2Park or as a hunter).
The points earned for an activation decrease over time, and the rate of decrease depends on the number of territories the team has captured.
Perhaps it would be more relevant to increase this « decline rate » proportionally to the team size, rather than with the number of territories controlled?
This would cause large teams to lose their territories much faster.
The drawback I see is that a team with few active members would be at a disadvantage.
Indeed, this seems to make the game somewhat unfair.
I have several suggestions:
@LuisD0 idea: Make teams with many members lose their territories (IP decline) much faster, and therefore have to be very active in activations and hunts to keep up.
@F4IUJ idea: Only consider the points of the top 10 and 20. Personally, I think it’s great that anyone can do a few activations and see their ranking; I think it would be a shame to limit the competition to the top activators.
Create team categories with separate rankings (e.g., solo (1), duo (2), squad (4), and clubs (n)). This seems like a good idea, but it implies subdividing everything by category (having separate maps for each category, among other things). It’s technically feasible, but I’m afraid it would complicate the website.
Limit the maximum number of participants (for example, to 8), just to prevent any problems.
Add categories or weighting based on mode of transportation? Walking, bicycles, electric bicycles, cars, electric cars… or based on modes such as FT8, CW, phone… or based on regions with a high density of parks… or based on QRP or not… There could be hundreds of ideas, and it will be complicated to add new adjustment factors.
I feel like we are losing sight of the origins and spirit of outdoor amateur radio. Will there come a day when we won’t respond to a Pota call because of petty competitiveness?
Let’s all keep this spirit of sharing experiences and photos of our beautiful activations alive.
