About hunts and activations balance

Hello everyone,

I’ve been receiving a lot of feedback since hunters were included in the point calculation.

Some of you feel that the effort of climbing a mountain isn’t comparable to the effort of a hunter, and that it’s unfair that someone who stays home can have more points than those who actually go out.

I understand all these arguments, and I’m starting this thread so we can discuss them together and find a balanced solution that works for everyone.

First, it’s very important for us to include hunters. They are (too often) overlooked in the programs, and without hunters, there are no activations.

Second, the influence points earned by a hunter are minimal (1 point for a POTA hunt, and the number of points from the summit for a SOTA hunt). Remember that a POTA activation with 100 QSOs earns 100 points; it’s not comparable at all.

The current problem is that hunts on « non-activated » territories (which can be captured with just 1 influence point) allow teams to capture many territories and accumulate points, which disrupts the rankings.

We could therefore imagine (for example):

  • That hunts only work on territories already captured
  • Or that only count the hunts of a TOTA activator (who is currently scoring points on the same territory).

We are also aware that many past POTA hunts are not being counted, because (as with activations) we don’t have access to this information. We will soon implement a system so that you can import your past hunts and have them included in the calculations.

Thank you so much for your feedback. There are many differing opinions, but I’m confident that we will collectively find a balance that works for everyone.
