I find the territories difficult to visualize. For example, when I see JO40-SW, I have no idea which territory it is until I look at the map (it’s Frankfurt).
Would it be possible to give each territory a descriptive name, something informative but more meaningful than the locator?
I’m sure there are already defined geographical entities we could use as a basis for correctly naming specific regions.
Indeed, it would be much clearer to read that « Team ABC has retaken the territory of Frankfurt » rather than JO40-SW.
However, if I take all the maidenhead locator squares on the globe, that makes 30,780 territories, and dividing by 4 (our southern, eastern, western, and northern quadrants) gives us 123,120.
Now, if we exclude all the areas that don’t have any SOTA or POTA points, that reduces it to 11,362 quadrant locators.
This leads me to several questions:
First, how do I work with 11,362 squares? It’s a huge amount of work.
How do I name each territory fairly (perhaps one name will appeal more to some than another)? If you have any sources from international organizations or a database on this, I’d be very grateful.
Who will be responsible for naming the territories? Perhaps a regional manager system, like the one used in the POTA/SOTA programs?
What about territories that span multiple countries and therefore have different languages? (If we implement territory « labels, » it’s too much work to translate them into each language; they’ll need to be in the territory’s language.)
Don’t get me wrong, I think the idea is great, but it raises a lot of questions .
